SACO, OCEAN PARK, OLD ORCHARD BEACH & PINE POINT
Saco
beaches are in the southern coast area of Maine. We are located 2 miles south of Old Orchard Beach and are at the ocean on
Saco Bay. On Saco beaches, bonfires are usually allowed with fire department’s permits. Old Orchard has amusements & gift
shops. From the beach area, it’s about 5 miles to Funtown which is a theme park & water park; about 7 miles to the Aquaboggin,
a water park; about 10 minutes to major supermarkets. Saco is half-way between Kittery & Freeport for outlet shopping; 20
minutes to South Portland to a major mall and 20 minutes to Portland. Only about 1-1/2 hours or so from the Boston area.
Ocean
Park (is part of Old Orchard) & Pine Point is in Scarborough- about 1-1/2 miles north of Old Orchard. Both are also similar
areas - both are very popular areas and definitely family oriented.
Saco is about 30 minutes north of Wells & Kennebunk
areas. There's a petting zoo in York, also about 40 minutes south of here and a smaller petting farm in Scarborough, about
30 mins. from Saco. Saco is the 36 mile marker (Exit 36 - formerly Exit 5) once you're on the Maine Turnpike (I-95).
From
Ferry Beach in Saco it’s a short walk to Camp Ellis where the Saco River meets the ocean. Camp Ellis is a quaint "Fishing
Village" area now dotted with newly-remodeled homes and some of the older ones still here. It is still an active fishing area
for commercial lobstermen & fishermen. You can go over to the dock and watch both fishing vessels and pleasure boats. Nearby
is a general convenience store which features daily lobster catch during season & will cook to perfection while you wait and
also serves a great breakfast. Whale watching & deep sea fishing boats leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. Kayak rentals
nearby for use on the Saco River which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay.
At Camp Ellis there are two local restaurants,
Wormwoods Restaurant, open year-round and Huots, open from April until Labor Day. There is a bait & tackle shop right at
the dock in Camp Ellis, an ice cream & gift shop, a mile-long jetty to fish off of or just to walk on, a large dock with both
fishing & pleasure boats in the harbor. You can also fish right off Surf St. at Ferry Beach at high tide or off the beach
itself.
Both areas are quaint areas, catering to families, sandy beaches (smaller one at Camp Ellis), unspoiled by
high rises. When you go to the beach and have to go back for lunch, you will not need to bring your blanket or chairs back.
No one will touch them when you’re gone. It’s that type of a beach and is an area catering to families. Many families return
here year after year for vacations.
LIKE LOBSTERS? Order directly from the Dean Coniaris, the Fish'n Optician in
Camp Ellis. He doesn't cook them for you but you save by paying "boat prices". He's locatd at 15 Eastern Ave. Camp Ellis
in Saco. 282-6533.
